Nuts and seeds are nutrient dense foods that are included in healthy diets. They’re rich with vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and fibre that help to boost the immune system and promote cardiovascular health.
Dried fruits are high in fibre and they’re an excellent source of antioxidants, especially phenols. They contain little to no fat, yet provide a significant amount of calories per serving, making them a natural source of energy for athletes. Plant polyphenols are good for warding off heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, and degenerative diseases of the brain. They are also a great source of fibre, which keeps our digestive systems healthy which may help prevent heart disease and some forms of cancer.
Sunflower seeds are a healthy source of essential fatty acids, Vitamin E, copper, B Vitamins, and selenium. I like to sprinkle these delicate tasting seeds over my salads and oatmeal, and they’re a great add to sandwiches and wraps. You can also soak them in water overnight, then blend them to make sunflower seed butter for your toast in the morning.
